22 de January

Albert Ludwig Sigesmund Neisser was born on January 22nd, 1855, Świdnica, Poland. He was a German doctor and scientist, known for having discovered the causative agent of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, whose bacterium is known scientifically as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, in his honor. He studied at the University of Breslau and later at Erlangen. Together with August Paul von Wasserman, they created the serology for Lues (syphilis), with alcoholic extract of macerated ox heart plus lecithin and cholesterol. This extract had been used since 1922 and only in 1941 was the macerated ox heart antigen identified as cardiolipin. He was tireless in fighting STD (including syphilis) and in caring for prostitutes.
